On Sept 12, 2013 HandsOn Suburban Chicago had the opportunity to participate in Zurich North America’s annual Giving Expo.  The Giving Expo is designed to allow Zurich employees to meet the six charities that the company supports and generate funds through raffles, live and silent auctions.  All proceeds benefit the following six charities:  Habitat for Humanity, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, American Cancer Society, American Red Cross,  Make-A-Wish & United Way. The silent auction featured a plethora of items that reflected Zurich’s outreach in the community with everything from Blackhawks tickets to American Girl Dolls.  HOSC’s current VISTAs were able to assist with the event and participated in setting up HOSC’s booth at the Giving Expo as well as support Zurich at the event by ensuring that the bid cards were being used properly.

HOSC and their team of VISTAs had a chance to interface with existing community partners as well as experience the positive effect of a large scale philanthropic event.  In addition to assisting Zurich with the Giving Expo, a couple of VISTAs donated blood at the on-site Red Cross blood drive. The amount of money raised during the Giving Expo was $38,000 and seemed to be a resounding success.  We know that the resources donated by Zurich will be put to good use by the sponsored charities and we look forward to participating in this great event next year!
