Each year, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day provides an opportunity for organizations and individuals to become engaged in service activities, and give back to their community. The MLK Day of Service is led by the Corporation of National and Community Service  www.nationalservice.gov and with HandsOn Suburban Chicago being the sponsoring agency of nine AmeriCorps VISTAs, it was the perfect chance for them to collaborate with a local nonprofit. For this year’s project, the VISTAs chose to give back to the Team Chrissy Foundation program, “Canes from Chrissy”  www.teamchrissy.org .

Team Chrissy was founded to help individuals in the greater Chicagoland area who have been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).  The “Canes from Chrissy” project provides canes that have been decorated by local artists, businesses, sponsors, and friends to MS patients in need. This helps them overcome any reluctance they may be feeling about needing to use a cane.

The three VISTA teams each decorated a cane. The Education VISTAs used bright colors and gold glitter to create a stylish cane, while the Veteran VISTAs stuck with a patriotic stars and stripes theme. The Tech VISTAs transformed their cane into a computer chip. “It was a fun activity for a good cause,” stated Tech VISTA Eamonn Gallagher during the painting of their cane.

If you would like to decorate a cane to help the mobility challenged, please contact Team Chrissy at teamchrissy@gmail.com or (312) 725-2014.
