Through HandsOn Suburban Chicago, Senior Corps-RSVP member Janet found the best of both worlds-giving back and having fun in the giving.
As each fall arrives hundreds of Paint-A-Thon (PAT) volunteers (including Senior Corps-RSVP members) are ready with brushes, scrapers, and rollers in hand, eager to help restore the exterior of local homes greatly in need of a facelift. Days later, when their work is completed, they are rewarded with smiles and hugs from the homeowners.
Senior Corps-RSVP volunteers Marilyn Hermann and June Wulfert, who have a combined 50-plus years of serving at the Lutheran Home for senior living in Arlington Heights, have found so many ways to contribute-by engaging with residents through one-on-one visits, setting up group chat sessions, or assisting with entertainment events.
In honor of National Service Recognition Day, Mayor Jim Schwantz & the Village of Palatine Council presented our Senior Corps-RSVP program with a proclamation recognizing the service of Senior Corps-RSVP members who volunteer throughout the Palatine community.
As a 9/11 Day of Service, 17 Community Paint-A-Thon teams comprised of 290 volunteers painted a total of 20 homes on September 15 & 16, 2017. Teams that participated came from area corporations, high school youth groups, local church groups, and community groups as well as individuals; all who were interested in being a part of this vital community restoration and beautification program, enabling seniors, the disabled and veterans to remain in their homes.
